The Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative
The Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) is an international program of The World Health Organization (WHO) and The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF).
Based on the WHO/UNICEF Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding, the Initiative recognizes hospitals and birth centers that have taken steps to provide an optimal environment for the promotion, protection and support of breastfeeding.
Breastfeeding is recognized by myriad health authorities as the foundation of good health for infants. Additionally, breastfeeding offers benefits for women's health, as well as for society in the form of reduced health care costs.
